The 11th Annual Foo Foo Festival is scheduled for Oct. 31 through Nov. 11, 2024, and this year, the Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department and Performing Arts Department will be participating in Foo Foo Festival with a collaborative project “Eclectic Fidelities.” With this project, PSC will be celebrating women in the arts by bringing in female exhibitors and performers to visit the College.
The Visual Arts Department specifically will be exhibiting artworks from Texas-based artist Rachel Livedalen in our Charles W. Lamar Studio, and her exhibition “Everything In Its Place” will be on view through Dec. 13, 2024. During the week of Foo Foo Festival, Livedalen will be presenting an artist lecture in the Lamar Lecture Hall (Room 1513) on Nov. 5, 2024 starting at 5:30 p.m., and a reception will follow. She will also be presenting two experimental mixed media monoprint workshops on Nov. 6 and 7 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (Room 1520). These events are free and open to the public.
Rachel Livedalen’s creative practice explores representations of femininity through the lens of art history and visual culture. She earned her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia. Residing in Fort Worth, Texas, Livedalen is currently an Associate Professor at Texas Christian University and heads the printmaking area. Her work has been supported by residencies at the Kala Art Institute, Virginia Creative Center for the Arts and A&H Museums-Maitland, as well as by the art installation program of the historic Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Her work is held in the collections of the Mulvane Art Museum, the Bradbury Art Museum, Soho House Austin and University of Texas Southwestern. Livedalen is represented by Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas, Texas and Ivester Contemporary in Austin, Texas.
The Performing Arts Department is presenting Seraph Brass, an all-female brass quintet, at Pensacola State College’s Ashmore Auditorium on Nov. 7, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. In its 11th season, Seraph Brass was founded by trumpet soloist Mary Elizabeth Bowden, with a mission to showcase the excellence of female brass players and highlight musicians from marginalized groups, both in personnel and in programming.
The members of Seraph Brass are passionate about music education and hold teaching positions at the University of North Texas, Shenandoah Conservatory, Texas State University and Texas Lutheran University. The ensemble’s 2024-2025 season includes performances in the United States, Peru, Mexico and South Korea. Seraph Brass performs a diverse body of repertoire, ranging from original transcriptions to newly commissioned works and core classics. The PSC performance includes the works of well-known composers Edvard Grieg, Giuseppe Verdi and Franz Liszt, along with the works of contemporary composers Rene Orth, Reena Esmail and Catherine McMichael.
