
North by Nuuk is an intimate, contemporary look at the people and the social and primal geographic landscapes of Greenland. Photographer Denis Defibaugh presents his journey from Nuuk to the settlement of Illorsuit, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, following Rockwell Kent’s earlier footsteps and offering a fresh look at timeless Greenland.

With over 30 solo exhibitions in galleries, museums, and cultural centers, Denis Defibaugh explores photography as a method of storytelling for diverse cultures. His documentary photographs have also been published in various books, most recently earning Defibaugh a prestigious National Science Foundation award in support of the project: Rockwell Kent and Early 1930’s Greenland, A Comparative View of Environmental, Social, and Cultural Change in Contemporary Greenland.
Defibaugh has researched and produced work for the project by collaborating with communities to gain an understanding of Kent’s time in Greenland as well as the changes in the culture of the communities from the 1930s to the present. North by Nuuk, Greenland After Rockwell Kent has been a traveling exhibition in the USA.
In addition to creating his art, Defibaugh has produced advertising and editorial images for major clients such as Coca-Cola, Polaroid, Delta Airlines, and more. Defibaugh is a professor emeritus of photography at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, and he regularly lectures and presents workshops internationally.
