Steve McCurry has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than thirty years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name. Born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; McCurry studied film at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a local newspaper. After several years of freelance work, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India. Traveling with little more than a bag of clothes and another of film, he made his way across the subcontinent, exploring the country with his camera.

Jerry Uelsmann

Born in Detroit on June 11, 1934, Jerry Uelsmann received his B.F.A. degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and his M.S. and M.F.A. at Indiana University in 1960. He began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 (“my first job offer”). He became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Juane Quick to See Smith

Smith calls herself a cultural arts worker which is also apparent in her work. Elaborating on her Native worldview, Smith’s work addresses today’s tribal politics, human rights and environmental issues with humor. Critic Gerrit Henry, (Art in America 2001) wrote: “For all the primal nature of her origins, Smith adeptly takes on contemporary American society in her paintings, drawings and prints, looking at things Native and national through bifocals of the old and the new, the sacred and the profane, the divine and the witty.”

The serene black and white print is typical of Clyde Butcher’s photography. Regarded as Florida’s finest landscape photographer Butcher has been documenting the untouched areas of landscapes on film for more than 50 years. Using a large format camera he hand processes his photographs on silver gelatin fiber-based paper. His photographs are selenium toned and printed in limited editions.

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude were a married couple who created environmental works of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were born on the same day, June 13, 1935; Christo in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, and Jeanne-Claude in Morocco. They first met in Paris in October 1958 when Christo painted a portrait of Jeanne-Claude’s mother. They then fell in love through creating art work together.
