Gina Phillips to hold artist lecture on May 28

Gina Phillips’s “Hold It Up To The Light” exhibition is on display in Pensacola State College’s Switzer Gallery May 27-Aug. 9.

Phillips, a mixed media narrative artist, will present a lecture from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, in the Switzer Lecture Hall, Building 15, Room 1590, on the College’s Pensacola campus.

A reception will follow from 6-7:30 p.m. Presented by the Anna Society, the lecture and reception are free and open to the public!

Phillips grew up in Kentucky and has lived in New Orleans since 1995, with both regions’ imagery, stories, and characters influencing her work. She began as a painter but has increasingly incorporated fabric and thread into her works.

A raw, narrative quality characterizes Phillips’ work – with tragicomedy being the  most common. The people and animals that tell the story often embody a magical realism.

She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Kentucky and a master of fine arts from Tulane University. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the U.S., including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Asheville Art Museum, Pepperdine University, Ballroom Marfa, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Her work has also been presented at art fairs, including PULSE LA, PULSE Miami, Texas Contemporary, and VOLTA Basel.

For a sneak peek at Phillips’ works, visit the Pensacola State College Visual Arts Facebook and Instagram social media pages.

The Switzer Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday. Tours are available with prior arrangements.
