A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (French: Un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte) was painted from 1884 to 1886 and is Georges Seurat’s most famous work. A leading example of pointillist technique, executed on a large canvas, it is a founding work of the neo-impressionist movement. Seurat’s composition includes a number of Parisians at a park on the banks of the River Seine. It is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

For more than 40 years, proceeds from sales of Paolo Soleri’s wind-bells have provided funds for construction to test his theoretical work. Ceramic and bronze bells are still produced and sold at Arcosanti and Cosanti in Arizona.

This image was part of Viva Florida 500: Celebrating Florida’s heritage and cultural history. Karen Glaser first became enthralled with underwater photography in 1983 and has been underwater ecosystems, including oceans, freshwater springs, outdoor swimming pools and wild swamplands.

With his wife’s support, in 1826 at age 41, Audubon took his growing collection of work to England. He sailed from New Orleans to Liverpool on the cotton-hauling ship Delos, reaching England in the autumn of 1826 with his portfolio of over 300 drawings. With letters of introduction to prominent Englishmen, and paintings of imaginary species including the “Bird of Washington”, Audubon gained their quick attention. “I have been received here in a manner not to be expected during my highest enthusiastic hopes.”

This portrait of a boy from the Suri tribe in Omo Valley is representative of the way McCurry is able to evoke a strong emotional connection to his subjects. At the foot of the vast Mehrangarh Fort, one can find the Blue City, a small tightly knit maze of houses located towards the north of Jodhpur. In one of the narrow alleyways a boy flees McCurry’s camera. Balancing three intersecting planes of colour – one of which is covered in stark red handprints – the image pulsates with energy as a young boy dashes through the narrow alleyways.”

Born in Camaguey, Cuba, Sanchez began his artistic career in 1944 at the Art Students League in New York City. His earlier works played on his fascination of light and shadow on colored forms. These features where very prominent in his early works of the 1950s which consisted of stylized and figurative themes, such as portraits, views of New York and tropical landscapes.

Harry Kline was a model-maker of boats, draftsman and sculptor. He is best known as the author of The Yachtsman’s Guide to the Bahamas for many years. These technical maritime books also contained his drawings and designs. His last sculpture exhibition was at the Judith Proctor Gallery in Seaside, Florida in the late 90’s or early 00’s.

It is the nature of these shapes to be quite flexible and unstable until the closing piece is put into place. Then the circuit of pressures and tensions is closed and they become rigid and stable by virtue of shape rather than material strength or solidity. Thus these pieces embody the equilibrium of physical forces as well as visual ones.”

Fisherman on Inle Lake is a depiction of the universal aspects of the working man. The image speaks to the point that fishing and being a fisherman, although done in several different styles, whether off a bridge, in a boat or on stilts, is fundamentally the same for all mankind.

Flowers in a glass vase on a partly draped stone ledge is a circa 1667 floral painting by Nicolaes van Verendael in the collection of the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum. Nicolaes van Verendael was a respected flower painter in Antwerp who worked with Jan Davidsz. de Heem, among others. The early provenance of this painting is unknown but it can be dated based on other works by Van Verendael, such as his garland painting in the Prado which was long attributed to Jan Brueghel the Elder, who began floral painting in Antwerp a half-century beforehand.

Saunders’ drawings are large-format drawings, not photographs. Saunders’ states, “I don’t use photographic equipment or processes in their creation; I use photographs as reference only. I draw them by hand on archival paper using powdered graphite suspended between layers of acrylic spray.”

Robert Seldon Duncanson  was a 19th-century American landscapist of European and African ancestry. Inspired by famous American landscape artists like Thomas Cole, Duncanson created renowned landscape paintings and is considered a second generation Hudson River School artist. Duncanson spent the majority of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio and helped develop the Ohio River Valley landscape tradition.

“Girl with a Pearl Earring” was originally titled “Girl with a Turban” and it wasn’t until the second half of the 20th Century that the name was changed. Regarded as Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece, this canvas is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of the North or the Dutch Mona Lisa.

HASTINGS TELLS HIS STORY, is one of several courtroom drawings depicted during the trail of Judge Alcee Hastings. The drawing became part of a series exhibited at the Art and Culture Center in 1983 in an exhibition entitled, Moving Pictures: The Trial of Judge Alcee Hastings.

For the past five decades Jerry Uelsmann, a pioneer in manipulation in the darkroom, has been successful in creating a never-ending array of surreal photographic montages by hand.

The serene black and white print is typical of Clyde Butcher’s photography. Regarded as Florida’s finest landscape photographer Butcher has been documenting the untouched areas of landscapes on film for more than 50 years. Using a large format camera he hand processes his photographs on silver gelatin fiber-based paper. His photographs are selenium toned and printed in limited editions.

Garcia was a conceptual artist deeply involved with civic life in Miami whose artwork often involved the whole community. Garcia studied mathematics at the University of Georgia in Athens and drawing and painting at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He was an art instructor at Miami-Dade Community College and the International Fine Arts College in Miami.

It has been suggested that Hopper was inspired by a short story of Ernest Hemingway’s, either “The Killers” (1927), which Hopper greatly admired, or from the more philosophical “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” (1933). In response to a query on loneliness and emptiness in the painting, Hopper outlined that he “didn’t see it as particularly lonely”. He said “unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city”.

“Ode to Susan” draws upon the long tradition aprons have played in all cultures as symbols of work, homemaker, caregiver and celebratory moments. This apron references the mid-20th century idealized woman in her “pretty little apron” waiting for her husband to come home and do his bidding.

Michael Smith is a local award winning photographer here in Florida. Although Smith retired as a Psychologist and Statistician in 2005 he has had a lifelong interest in the art and science of photography. For almost fifty years he used traditional photographic chemical processing methods and light-sensitive film, slide, and print media to create and produce his photographic art.

SELF PORTRAIT IN BLACK WRAPPING is one of Juan Gonzalez’s earlier paintings. The painting was part of Gonzalez’s Master of Fine Art exhibition at the University of Miami. It has also been exhibited at the Lowe Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center in Miami, FL.

Audes Saul was born in Bombardopolis, Haiti, in 1949 within a few miles of the point where Columbus first arrived in the new world in 1492. Orphaned at the age of 16, he migrated to Port-au-Prince in 1967.

Gibson’s artwork is considered folk, or naïve/outsider art. It has a fragility and dreamlike presence. Gibson’s work mostly focuses on the human face, flowers, and small animals.

Emily Wilson was raised in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1982 she received a BFA degree with a focus in painting from the Memphis College of Art, Memphis, TN. During her time there she developed an interest in wood and metal media. A whimsical narrative style already present in her early development of sculpture was greatly influenced by living in the New Orleans area during the latter half of the 1980’s.

“The Boating Party” by Mary Cassett is located on the south wall of building 4, the Allen Liberal Arts Building.
The Boating Party depicts an unknown woman, baby, and man in a sailboat. The boat has a canoe stern, is boomless, and has three thwarts. The inside of the boat is described as yellow. It is an unusual painting in Cassatt’s œuvre. While it does show her familiar theme of a mother and child, most of her other paintings are set in interiors or in gardens. It is also one of her largest oil paintings.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa is located on the Allen Liberal Arts Building #4 facing Ninth Avenue.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa has been described as “possibly the most reproduced image in the history of all art”, as well as being a contender for the “most famous artwork in Japanese history”.It has influenced several notable artists and musicians, including Vincent van Gogh, Claude Debussy, Claude Monet, and Hiroshige.

“The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh has been installed on the back side of the Ashmore Auditorium, Building 8, while “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt is on the south end of Building 14, facing the Charles W. Lamar Studio Gallery.

The Railway painting is located on the south side of Building 14, Spears Behavioral Sciences.
The Railway, widely known as Gare Saint-Lazare, is an 1873 painting by Édouard Manet. It is the last painting by Manet of his favourite model, the fellow painter Victorine Meurent, who was also the model for his earlier works Olympia and the Luncheon on the Grass. It was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874, and donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1956.

William Ward, was Professor of Art at the University of Miami in Coral Gables for many years. His specialty was large welded sculpture although he loved to draw. He had many large sculpture commissions in Miami and also at Darton College in Albany, Georgia. He designed and made the Official Mace of the University of Miami.
